about

Johannesburg' is a song that stems from the love that I have personally and specifically with the inner-city of Johannesburg. Downtown Jo’burg is not explored by all or enjoyed by all. It offers far more that it appears from the other side of the railway line and has a deep and important history. It is exciting! It is always new and changing. It is a place to get lost in and to quickly get back on track. If one starts meandering through it - you never know where you'll end up.
‘Chintswa chiri murutsoka’ is a Shona phrase I learnt whilst learning a traditional Zimbabwean song on mbira whilst moving along the pavements from Braamfontein to Yeoville with a friend and talented musician. Directly translated it means: I discover new things through my feet.
i.e. It is good to gain understanding and see new things by walking with someone in a new space.
Johannesburg is fast. Haibo! 'Catch a smile before they go - the lights change faster than you know!’ We tried to capture this element with the sounds and styles adopted in the song.
‘I’m just a boy from Johannesburg’ is an interesting notion as it can be interpreted as overflowing with potential, capable to do anything and at the same time can be seen as a place that makes it difficult to progress and reach your potential. Like many large cities. This is the idea I wish to leave the listener with. What does living in Johannesburg mean to you?
